St. Fintan’s Cemetery History

St. Fintan’s Cemetery in Sutton, Dublin, is a place steeped in history and tradition. The ancient burial site dates back to at least the 13th century and was discovered by local historians in the early 20th century.

It is believed that Saint Fintan himself was buried here; however, this has been disputed by some experts as there is no definitive proof of the claim.

Regardless of its origin, St. Fintan’s Cemetery has long been a place of reverence for locals and visitors alike.

The cemetery is located near Howth Head and can be accessed via a winding path leading down a small hill to the grounds below.

It is said to be one of the oldest Christian sites on the Dublin Coast and contains numerous ancient monuments such as headstones erected by families over the centuries who wanted to commemorate their loved ones who have passed away.

Over time, these monuments have weathered significantly due to exposure to harsh elements; however, some still remain intact and are relatively well-preserved today.

The cemetery also contains several other fascinating artefacts such as an ancient cross which stands tall near the main entrance and several Celtic symbols carved into various stones throughout the grounds.

While it isn’t known exactly how old these symbols are or why they were created, they are believed to have been made around 500 AD as part of a form of pre-Christian worship practiced by locals at that time.

Additionally, St. Fintan’s Cemetery is home to two large mounds known as “Giant’s Graves” which are believed to be graves for warriors from long ago who served in battles nearby.

However, this claim has never been officially verified since no evidence of human remains could ever be found inside them during archaeological excavations conducted over the last century due its high water table level which prevents any digging activities from taking place without flooding occurring nearby homes and businesses.

In recent years, St Fintan’s Cemetery has seen an increase in visitors coming to pay their respects or take part in memorial services held there on special occasions such as All Souls Day or Easter Sunday Masses conducted by local clergymen every year since 1921 when it underwent renovations after being used mainly for sheep grazing during World War One..

Aside from religious ceremonies, many people also come out just to admire its old architecture and stunning views overlooking Dublin Bay that stretch out towards Howth Head on a clear day – making it one of Dublin’s most beautiful locations for contemplation or reflection within its city limits
