Bohernabreena Cemetery History

Bohernabreena Cemetery in Dublin is an integral part of Irish history and culture. It is one of the most important cemeteries in Ireland, containing graves from some of the earliest Irish settlers to more modern graves from the 20th century.

This special cemetery is known for its vast history and unique features that make it truly remarkable.

Established in 1794 by a group of Quakers, Bohernabreena Cemetery was the first Nonconformist burial ground in Ireland.

The cemetery got its name from the nearby stream, known as ‘Bouer na Brienne’.

It provided an alternative place of burial to those who did not conform to the Anglican Church’s faith or ritual practices which were dominant during this time period.

As a result, the cemetery became a refuge for people who fell outside of mainstream religious beliefs and practices.

The cemetery includes a variety of interesting features, including seven oak trees lining each side of the entrance pathway that were planted in 1818 to commemorate those buried there.

There are also numerous monuments scattered throughout Bohernabreena Cemetery, many of which are dedicated to prominent figures from Irish history such as Daniel O’Connell and Charles Stewart Parnell.

In addition, there are several headstones and memorials honouring those who fought in World War I, as well as those who died during The Great Famine (1845-52).

The grounds also house one of only four surviving examples of an ancient form of stone burial chamber constructed by early Christian monks in Ireland called Souterrains.

These stone chambers date back to 600 AD and have been carefully preserved over time with minimal intervention from archaeologists due to their fragile nature.

One particular souterrain located at Bohernabreena was built by St Finian’s monks as a refectory for their Abbey and has since been used as a place for retreat by various people over many centuries.

This rich heritage makes Bohernabreena Cemetery one of Ireland’s most important historical sites and provides visitors with an insight into our country’s past through its unique monuments, headstones and other features that have stood the test of time.

The cemetery is now open to visitors year-round so they can experience first-hand this extraordinary piece of Irish history that has existed since before 1800 CE!

Undoubtedly one Ireland’s most iconic cultural landmarks, Bohernabreena Cemetery serves both as an invaluable reminder our nation’s past while also providing comfort for family members honouring loved ones buried here today.

Its unique archaeological structures give visitors an insight into how early Irish life was lived while providing something tangible to explore – making it both a captivating educational experience as well as offering spiritual solace for families visiting grave sites belonging to generations gone by.

Ensuring the preservation and protection on such an important site will ensure that future generations can continue learning about our fascinating past through this remarkable landmark located just south-west from Dublin City Centre!
